Why do the years seems to fly by now, but they didn't when you were younger?

For me, it's the cherishing of benchmark events in my earlier life and differences in lifestyle.

Hey double is that a proven fact? I'm curious because I have never heard that before. Allways thought it was just me. I'm 56 now and it seems like Xmas comes every 6 months. Years are blasting by. Sucks getting old lol

56 also

I'd say it seems to go faster when older simply because you have far less time left at 56 vs. 21 !

When I was around 8 or 9 I saw back to the future for the first time.
My favorite movie .

Back then I thought the gap between 1985 and 1955 might as well have been a million years .

Then we went from 1985 to 2015 and that gap even though it was the same length seems much shorter then 1955 to 1985

When I was younger, my years were bookmarked by concerts, movies, and different experiences that often meant saving my allowance (prior to working) or paychecks when I started working to have the opportunity to do things. I think it meant a lot more back then because their was more sacrifice involved and the anticipation was exciting. Then there was going to parties with my peers for the first time and the relationships with friends and the opposite sex. Add to that trying to figure out what to do with your life, and there was a lot going on. Years didn't fly by.

Now my wife and I can afford to do much more and I think many things get taken for granted. Often there is a certain routine we all fall into with work and family, and let's face it, life is just so more predictable (and for some...boring). Days start to blend in and the years just seem to fly by.

I could tell you every World Series and super bowl winner from 1980-2010 and will STRUGGLE to get half of them right for the 2010’s

ad kids, we had WAY more time on our hands. I’ll listen to songs from the 80’s and 90’s and knew all the songs.

cant remember the last time I enjoyed “new music”.

love going to concerts but very little interest of seeing anyone who’s come out in the past 10 years

(life also changed because of kids and career)

It just makes sense to me, but it could be just my idea..

1) mathematical: your frame of reference adjusts proportionately as you age, so time seems to move more quickly

2) you have more things in your head to think about as you age so time seems to move more quickly (4-5-6-7 years old nothing in your head, a trip in the car for 4 hours felt like forever)

I honestly think for most people it's the complete reverse. Very little going on and life is very routine as we age.

When i was about twenty an old guy told me "kid enjoy your life now because you will wake up one day and wonder where did it all go. The time flies by." Yeah Yeah i said.
A few years ago i was driving down the street and a group of young guys were jogging. it is late summer so i figure they are a high school cross country team getting ready for the upcoming season. i think to myself wonder if i could still do that. (i ran cross country in high school.) Son of a bitch i say to myself, that was 45 years ago! That guy was right. Where did it all go.

It's all about time. The older you get you start to realize it is running out.

It's something you took for granted. Time was of no concern when you were 20, the
world was yours for the taking. There was so much to experience, goals to accomplish
and you couldn't wait for tomorrow.

Now your goal is to live long enough to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Time has come to
be a precious commodity.

And there's mans most basic instinct, survival. When you're young it isn't part of your
vocabulary. It was just expected. Now it's front and center.

I don't know if my explanation makes any sense but it's the best I can offer.

Bingo! It seems to "Fly by" when you're older contrary to when you're younger because of benchmarks or milestones. When you're younger there are so many major milestones. First girlfriend, First time having sex, turning 16 getting your license, turning 18 first trip to Casino, bars and clubs (in Quebec), turning 19 for rest of country or 21 for others. First road trip, first vacation down south, first vacation oversees, first threesome, first car, first house etc etc... These are all major events that most cherish and remember fondly. There like time stamps in our memory. As you get older you don't have as many "time stamps" so time feels like it's flying by.

I hear everyone saying this. I know when I was younger, the summers lasted forever & I enjoyed every minute......as an adult, time always goes by fast.

Maybe because when you're a kid, you soak everything in, hence time feels like it's slower, & as an adult, you don't soak everything in anymore, I don't know, but a very interesting question.

I can honestly say that's absolutely positively NOT the case

My focus has shifted, it's not all focused around my kids all day every day, but we're staying very active

I honestly think you're an exception if that's the case for you Willie. Although your definition is really more in the category of "older" to me. I'm comparing my high school and early college years to where my life is now and it's definitely more routine. Pull out all the kids who are in different areas of the country and there's a lot less going on in my life. And even less with the restrictions in place. Of course you have some new twins to deal with which will definitely keep you busy.

Time speeds up when you have kids because you’re always doing stuff for them and worrying about them and not thinking about only yourself.

One thing I have learned about the passage of time is that you only understand it after experiencing it.
